What is Mesothelioma and how is it caused? Mesothelioma is a uncommon type of cancer that mainly affects the lining of the lungs, but can also impact the heart, abdomen and other organs. Roughly 3,000 cases of mesothelioma cancer are diagnosed each year in the United States. The average age at prognosis is 62 years of age, happens about four times more regularly in men than in women and is nearly constantly caused by exposure to asbestos.
